Overview
My name is Santhra Thambidurai and I am a former highly rated and highly effective teacher from HSN and HSS. 5 years ago, I left full-time teaching when my first child was born and started my one-on-one math coaching business. I had taught Precalculus Honors at both HSN and HSS and since then, tutored students who have had every single Precalculus Honors teacher at West Windsor. I know each teacher’s style, the types of questions asked, and I stay up to date with curriculum changes. With the most recent curriculum change, I have spent hours analyzing worksheets from different teachers, doing problems, creating problems similar to the problems taught.
Precalculus Honors has become one of the hardest courses in Mathematics at WW-P. This past year, I had several students who came to me for help because of the difficulty level of the curriculum in this course. I have seen tears, anxiety over the subject and a lack of self-esteem. Students who I have known to be mathematically smart tell me that they don’t feel smart and that they are not good at Mathematics.
What are the solutions to this problem?
- Be very mindful of the course you will be taking. Why are you taking this course? Do you want to take on a STEM focused career? If you do not like Mathematics, why not take the college prep course (which still covers topics necessary for standardized tests such as the SAT) and focus on Honors courses that are relevant to your interests?
- If you do have to take Precalculus Honors, how do you prepare yourself so that you are able to tackle the topics effectively when the time comes? As someone who has taught thousands of students over the last decade, I believe that one can grow one’s mathematical aptitude with the right mindset, perseverance, and grit.
I am aware that my one-on-one tutoring may be expensive for some parents, and I want to offer something that will be more affordable to parents to get students to feel more confident in the course going in. The course will run from July 6th through August 24th (classes that meet just 2 hours a week) with homework support and assessments included. I will also be incorporating SAT problems involving topics from Precalculus for those students who will be taking the August SAT.
Schedule
Goals:
- Get students taking Precalculus Honors in the fall to feel more confident going in (approximately 1-2 units of curriculum will be covered).
- Students taking the SAT in August will learn the necessary Precalculus that is on the exam:
Time Commitment: 2 hours online class per week + H.W (Mandatory)+ Studying (Mandatory). It will be extremely important for students to ensure that they get work done in between classes for the classes to be effective.
15 classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays
July: 6, 11 & 13, 18 & 20, 25 & 27
August: 1 & 3, 8 & 10, 15 & 17, 22 & 24
