The Numeracy Project: Mar ‘23 Edition
Recent News
Hello Everyone,
The second month of the project has come and gone in a flash! What began as a simple endeavor to find out more ways to motivate my students as to where they can apply the math they’re learning has become more and more enjoyable for me. For some background, a published episode of The Numeracy Report is only one facet of the project. I conduct many background “Exploratory Calls” based on recommendations and leads to try and better understand the landscape. I’ve encountered nothing but support from everyone I’ve spoken with. The mission of the project resonates with many folks. If you’re interested in how you can help, please check out the end of this newsletter for the “Give a Minute to the Project” initiative.
From a personal perspective, a lot has been going on. I’m in India right now, fortunate enough to spend time with my mother, sisters, and our families for a reunion. As we return to the US, my family is gearing up for a big move. While moving is generally stressful, we’ve been preparing and moving through each step reasonably smoothly.
Lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and every one who has played some role in the project so far: as a viewer, as a strategist and thinker, as a helpful contact willing to engage with me, and of course as a guest on my show. I am very excited about all to come!
Thanks,
Santhra
The Latest from The Numeracy Report
Since the last update we’ve published three episodes of The Numeracy Report. Here’s a brief recap in case you missed any of them:
Episode 3: Math in Mining feat. Grant Arnold
“Anyone who’s successful in today in business has to employ some degree of statistical analysis in all their processes. Otherwise, they’ve missed the boat.” – Grant Arnold, former President and Chief Operating Officer of Canadian Royalties.
It was a pleasure talking rocks and numbers with Grant Arnold. The combination of his passion for geology and his mathematical mindset resulted in a prolific career that took him to the heights of his profession, including leading a tem that received the internationally recognized Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year Award.
In the full interview, we cover topics ranging from:
- How he turned his childhood hobby (rocks) into a career
- How he used math to become prolific in his career
- How Sensitivity Models and Statistics are used in mining projects
- And much more!
Episode 4: Math in Human Health feat. Dr. Nevicia Case
“The moment you move to areas like psychology or sociology or even public health suddenly you’re dealing with human systems that are far more complex and very difficult to control . . . we have Statistics to help us better account for those variables that we’re not able to control.” – Dr. Nevicia Case, Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law.
For this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Nevicia Case, who has exemplified a lifelong passion for learning. With a PhD in Psychiatry, a Masters of Science in Medical Sciences, and a member of the One Young World Global Community for Young Leaders (to name just a few accomplishments!), she is using every tool available to her to pursue her curiosity and improve human health.
In the full interview, we cover topics ranging from:
- How she uses curiosity to guide her on her mission
- How she uses math and statistics to remove costs from healthcare and make lives easier for patients, their families, and their communities
- How stats differs in its application between the “harder sciences” and the social sciences
- And much more!

“A lot of people’s dreams is to work in sports in some capacity and you have the advent sort of, of the sports analytics movement, has created more paths for people to do that.” – Michael Leone, Director of Analytics for Establish The Run
If you’re like me, you know many students interested in sports. This episode was a deep dive into the path that one sports fan took to build a career between his love of sports and his success with math. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Michael Leone, Director of Analytics for Establish The Run, a sports content site that provides projections for fantasy sports and sports betting.
In the full interview, we cover topics ranging from:
- Examples of how he uses statistics in developing sports projections
- How he landed a dream career between what he loves (sports) and what he’s good at (math)
- The changing landscape of the talent pool for tech-based employment opportunities
- And much more

Give a Minute to The Project!
Lastly, I emphasize that the success of this project is multi-faceted. It requires me to be able to connect with people who are passionate about how they use math in their work, and it needs me to be able to connect any insights with the audience who’s interested in it. With that being said, see if you can take a minute to review the actions below and see if any are applicable to you:
- If math has played a significant role in your life, click here and let’s talk!
- Connect people within your network who are passionate about how they use math in their work for me to chat with and share their message (click here).
- SHARE with anyone, and everyone who you think could benefit from this content!
